Dr Rosina Mamokgethi Phakeng is a well-known successful author, motivational speaker and South African professor of Mathematics education. Dr Phakeng is currently vice-chancellor of the University of Cape Town and she has been UCT’s vice-chancellor since 2018.

Earlier this morning, Prof Mamokgethi Phakeng shared an interesting tweet about how she spent her Sunday with family. She tweeted “Hiking up Table Mountain on a cold rainy day.” she also a short video showing how happy she was after completing the hike.

The tweet has been viewed by 1,2 million people in South Africa and most people had mixed feelings about her video. She ended up releasing a statement addressing the people who had questions about her video.

“They say I must feel liberated from the shackles of societal mores, I must forge my own path and eschew the confining standards of ethicality. They also advise me to avert deviants who, in their lascivious fervor, desecrate a pure video showing excitement after a tough hike.

They tell me they don’t expect me to post myself in church uniform to appease the likes of Dr Sunrise – who seek their gratification therein. Let’s all unfurl the banner of autonomy and live our lives the way see fit (and allow others to do the same). The world will be a much happier place.” she wrote.

@Phunyuka replied with “Prof Mokgethi proves that in her youth days she was busy with books all day up until her 40″s upwards, now she’s in her 50’s she wants to be youth again that’s the problem with academics they take your youth in you away.”
