King Misuzulu kaZwelithini has expressed hope that he will not be called to testify before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, joking that the commission has become almost unavoidable on television.

The Zulu monarch reportedly made the remarks while reflecting on the extensive public attention surrounding the commission, whose proceedings have attracted significant media coverage across South Africa.

King Misuzulu said he prays that he will not be among those called to appear before the commission. He explained that whenever he switches on his television, the commission is seemingly all he sees, highlighting how prominent the hearings have become in the country’s public discourse.

The Madlanga Commission was established to investigate allegations relating to criminality, corruption and possible political interference within South Africa’s law-enforcement structures. Its hearings have featured testimony from a number of individuals and have generated widespread public and political interest.

The commission has been examining evidence and allegations involving senior police officials, politicians, businesspeople and other individuals. Its proceedings have also brought renewed attention to broader concerns about the relationship between organised crime, law enforcement and political influence.

King Misuzulu’s comments appear to have been made in a light-hearted manner, rather than as a statement about any specific evidence before the commission. His remarks nevertheless underscore the extensive coverage the inquiry has received.

Whether the Zulu monarch will be required to appear before the commission would depend on whether the commissioners determine that his testimony is relevant to their investigation.

The Madlanga Commission continues to hear evidence as it works towards establishing the facts surrounding the allegations before it. Any findings or recommendations will be made after the relevant evidence has been considered.

For now, King Misuzulu appears hopeful that he can remain an observer of the proceedings rather than become one of the witnesses appearing before the commission.
