Court Shown Photo Of Mapisa-Nqakula Allegedly Accepting R250k On Gift Bag

A dramatic moment unfolded in court as prosecutors presented a photograph allegedly showing former National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula accepting a bag containing R250,000.

The image formed part of evidence presented in the corruption case involving Mapisa-Nqakula who has faced allegations relating to payments she allegedly received during her tenure as Speaker and while serving in government.

The prosecution has alleged that the money was provided in connection with contracts involving a former military contractor. The photograph was presented as part of the State’s broader effort to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged payments.

The appearance of the image in court added a significant visual element to proceedings that have centred on allegations of corruption, financial transactions and the relationship between Mapisa-Nqakula and individuals connected to the contracts.

Mapisa-Nqakula has denied the allegations against her and has previously maintained that she is innocent of the charges. The case remains before the courts, meaning the allegations have not been proven and she is presumed innocent unless convicted.

The photograph itself does not, on its own, establish the purpose of the money or prove that a criminal offence was committed. Those issues remain matters for the court to determine after considering all the evidence presented by both the prosecution and the defence.

The former Speaker resigned from her position in April 2024 amid mounting pressure linked to the allegations. Her departure followed revelations surrounding an investigation into alleged cash payments.

The case has attracted considerable public attention because of Mapisa-Nqakula’s senior political position and her previous role as South Africa’s Defence Minister before becoming Speaker.

As proceedings continue the court is expected to scrutinise the circumstances surrounding the alleged R250,000 payment, including who provided the money why it was allegedly provided and whether it formed part of any unlawful arrangement.

The photograph is therefore likely to become an important part of the wider evidentiary record as the corruption case progresses.
