A 42-year-old man has been arrested after police allegedly discovered more than R1.1 million in cash concealed inside a Ford Ranger Raptor during an operation targeting suspected organised criminal activity.
According to the information provided, officers were conducting a search of the high-performance vehicle when they discovered large quantities of banknotes hidden inside ordinary shoe boxes. The discovery immediately raised questions about the source and intended destination of the money.
Police reportedly seized the cash and detained the driver while investigations were launched to establish how he came into possession of the funds. Authorities are expected to examine whether the money could be linked to money laundering, tax-related offences or other criminal activity.
The situation escalated when two other men allegedly arrived at the scene and attempted to persuade officers to release the driver. The pair reportedly offered police R200,000 to stop the investigation and secure his freedom.
Instead of accepting the alleged bribe, officers arrested the two men. Their detention brings the total number of suspects in custody to three.
The two additional suspects are expected to face charges related to bribery and corruption, while the original suspect remains under investigation over the large amount of unexplained cash.
Investigators will now work to establish the origin of the R1.1 million, determine who owned the money and establish whether it was connected to a wider criminal network.
The arrests highlight the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in tackling the movement of large amounts of unexplained cash, particularly where authorities suspect organised criminal activity.
The suspects remain subject to due process, and the allegations against them have yet to be tested in court. Further developments are expected as investigators trace the money and prepare the case for prosecution.
