Political drama and light-hearted social media banter collided during the Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) 13th anniversary celebrations after an African National Congress (ANC) helicopter flew over the gathering.

Rather than ignoring the unexpected moment, EFF leader Julius Malema quickly turned it into an opportunity to energise the crowd, using the aircraft’s appearance to reinforce his message about the party’s growing influence.

Speaking to thousands of supporters, Malema joked that even the ANC had to pay attention to the EFF milestone celebration. His comments drew loud cheers from those in attendance, with many supporters embracing the moment as a symbolic sign that the ruling party could not ignore the EFF political presence. The incident soon became one of the most talked-about highlights of the event.

Videos and photos of the helicopter flying overhead spread rapidly across social media platforms. South Africans responded with a mix of humour, political commentary, and playful memes. Many users joked that the helicopter had arrived to monitor the EFF celebrations, while others suggested it was simply passing by.

Regardless of the reason, the unexpected flyover sparked widespread discussion online. The conversation soon shifted to politics, with many people debating which party they would support in future elections.

Some users argued that they remained loyal to the ANC because of its history and achievements, while others expressed admiration for the EFF energetic leadership and outspoken approach to national issues. A number of social media users admitted they found themselves torn between the two parties, saying both continue to shape South Africa’s political landscape in different ways.

Others chose to stay away from the political debate altogether, focusing instead on the amusing interaction between the helicopter and Malema speech. They praised the EFF leader for thinking on his feet and transforming an ordinary moment into a memorable talking point that captured public attention.

The incident highlighted how quickly political events can dominate online conversations, especially when unexpected moments unfold in front of large crowds. Whether viewed as a coincidence or a symbolic moment, the helicopter flyover became one of the defining memories of the EFF anniversary celebration, with South Africans continuing to share jokes, opinions, and spirited debates long after the event ended.
