Nkosikhona Phakelumthakathi Ndabandaba has claimed that President revealed the government had received intelligence indicating that hostel dwellers were allegedly planning to attack township residents on June 30.

According to Ndabandaba, the President disclosed the information during discussions, saying security agencies had been alerted to the potential threat ahead of the reported date. The claim has reignited public debate over the handling of intelligence warnings and the state’s readiness to prevent violence in communities vulnerable to unrest.

If accurate, the alleged warning raises important questions about what preventive measures were taken by law enforcement and whether the reported threat was successfully neutralised before it could escalate into violence.

Ndabandaba’s remarks come at a time of heightened political tensions and growing public concern over community safety. The statement has drawn attention on social media, with many calling for greater transparency regarding security intelligence and the government’s response to threats affecting ordinary citizens.

Neither the Presidency nor the relevant security authorities had publicly provided further details on the alleged intelligence at the time of publication. As a result, it remains unclear what specific information informed the reported warning or whether any arrests or security operations were linked to the alleged threat.

The Presidency has yet to officially respond to Ndabandaba’s claims. Any confirmation or clarification from government officials is expected to shed more light on the circumstances surrounding the reported intelligence briefing.

The development is likely to intensify scrutiny of South Africa’s security structures, particularly regarding how intelligence is assessed, communicated, and acted upon when there are warnings of possible violence.

For now, Ndabandaba’s account adds another dimension to the ongoing national conversation about public safety, intelligence gathering, and the responsibility of authorities to protect communities from potential attacks.
