Major-General Feroz Khan, the deputy head of Crime Intelligence, was shot in Houghton, Johannesburg, on Sunday night, just days before he was due to testify before the Madlanga Commission .
The shooting happened around 11pm on Third Avenue. Khan was taken to hospital in a critical condition . Two shell casings were reportedly found at the scene, and he is believed to have been hit in the lower body .
Police have not yet released any information about a possible motive or suspects .
Khan has been under intense scrutiny for months. He was arrested in May on charges related to precious metals and defeating the ends of justice . The Madlanga Commission has also heard testimony accusing him of interfering in police investigations, including a major cocaine bust in 2021 .
His legal attempts to block the commission from accessing data on devices seized from him were recently withdrawn .
He was expected to appear before the commission on 1 July. It remains unclear whether the shooting will affect his testimony .
