Former Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba has outlined the measures he introduced during his tenure to address South Africa’s longstanding immigration challenges, saying his administration focused on modernising the country’s immigration system while strengthening border management.

Speaking about his time in office, Gigaba said one of his key priorities was improving the efficiency of the Department of Home Affairs by reducing processing delays for visas and permits. He explained that the department introduced reforms aimed at making immigration services more accessible while ensuring that security standards were not compromised.

Gigaba noted that his administration worked to modernise the immigration framework by promoting the use of technology to streamline applications and improve record-keeping. According to him, these initiatives were designed to reduce bureaucracy, combat fraud, and create a more transparent system for both citizens and foreign nationals.

He also highlighted efforts to strengthen border security, saying the government sought to improve coordination between law enforcement agencies responsible for managing ports of entry. Gigaba argued that effective border management was essential in combating illegal immigration, human trafficking, and cross-border crime while facilitating legitimate travel and trade.

The former minister said his department recognised the importance of attracting skilled professionals and investors to South Africa. As a result, policy changes were introduced to make it easier for qualifying individuals to obtain visas, with the aim of boosting economic growth and encouraging foreign investment.

Gigaba further stated that addressing immigration challenges required balancing national security with economic development and human rights. He maintained that South Africa needed an immigration system that protected the country’s interests while remaining welcoming to tourists, skilled workers, and legitimate business travellers.

Despite these reforms, immigration remains a contentious issue in South Africa, with concerns over illegal migration, border security, and pressure on public services continuing to dominate public debate. Successive governments have faced calls to strengthen immigration enforcement while ensuring compliance with constitutional and international obligations.

Reflecting on his tenure, Gigaba said the reforms implemented during his time as Minister of Home Affairs laid the foundation for a more efficient and modern immigration system. He acknowledged that immigration challenges are complex and require continuous policy improvements, investment in technology, and cooperation between government departments to achieve lasting solutions.

The debate over immigration policy continues to shape South Africa’s political and economic landscape, with stakeholders calling for practical solutions that balance security, economic opportunity, and regional cooperation.
