A legal journalist named Karyn Maughan has made remarks that have put Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema back under the microscope. Maughan claims that the outspoken politician may be under growing pressure due to a mix of long-standing accusations and fresh events.
While facing a litany of accusations throughout his political career, Malema has spent years portraying himself as a staunch opponent of corruption and accountability, according to Maughan, who spoke on 702. Corruption, money laundering, tax issues, and hate speech accusations are among those that have been levelled, she said.
Maughan thinks that political actors who are under scrutiny for their lack of transparency and accountability could be subject to more pressure as a result of recent events involving the Madlanga Commission. She stated that the people of South Africa are putting pressure on their government officials and institutions to improve their performance.
This is a different season for South Africans, according to Maughan. “It seems like there has been a significant change, with more accountability being seen, as a result of the Madlanga Commission.”
Even though they arose before Malema established the EFF, Maughan brought up charges related to the Ratanang Family Trust and the On-Point Engineering incident again. She said the accusations revolved around the idea that he profited financially from what was said to be an illegal tender process.
She mentioned that he faced accusations of money laundering related to the Ratanang Trust in 2012, shortly before he founded the EFF.
Another major scandal associated with the EFF that she brought up was the one involving the failure of VBS Mutual Bank. Party officials have denied claims that VBS’s financial backing was related to their donation, while they have acknowledged receiving a donation from the bank in the past.
Questions regarding Malema’s tax affairs, wealth sources, and lifestyle are another topic that Maughan brings up. According to her, stories about property ownership, trusts linked to Malema, and parliamentary disclosures have maintained the public’s attention.
“Again, the tax story brings to light an individual who is part of a political party, receives an MP salary, and lives a lavish lifestyle,” she remarked.
As MPs investigate claims of wrongdoing in the areas of intelligence, law enforcement, and corruption, Maughan maintained that Malema’s involvement in legislative oversight mechanisms brings a new angle to the discussion.
She did, however, concede that Malema had, over the years, been able to endure political pressure.
As far as survival is concerned, “he has shown more resilience and tenacity than anyone,” Maughan remarked.
The claims against Malema have not resulted in a criminal conviction since he has always denied any misconduct. The public is likely to continue to scrutinise questions about his behaviour, nevertheless, due to the enhanced emphasis on accountability.
