Buses carrying MK Party supporters arrived at Durban’s Curries Fountain stadium on Wednesday ahead of a march to the city hall against corruption and poor service delivery.

There was a heavy police presence outside the stadium as protesters, some wearing MK Party gear and carrying knobkerries and placards, made their way into the venue. MK Party secretary general Sibonelo Nomvalo was expected to address members before the march.

Anti immigrant organisation March and March said in a statement that it encouraged its members to join the MK Party’s protest, in keeping with its stance of advocating for a safer South Africa where illegal and irregular immigration is eradicated.

The organisation called for the township economy to be returned to South Africans, claiming that the central business district in eThekwini has been hijacked by illegal immigrants and criminal syndicates led by foreign nationals from Somalia, Pakistan and Nigeria.

March and March also called on the municipality to take all illegal occupants who have hijacked government buildings to court and to meet with affected owners to develop a plan to reclaim the buildings. The organisation said this was why it was joining the MK Party’s protest as it continues its roadshows to meet with all political parties.
