Sibonelo Nomvalo has urged KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi to send the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) to Mzimkhulu, expressing that members of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) in the region are concerned for their safety due to escalating tensions within the party.
Nomvalo stated that internal conflicts and threats among MKP supporters in Mzimkhulu have fostered a climate of fear and instability. He emphasized the need for immediate police intervention to avert violence and safeguard both party members and local residents.
“We do not feel secure,” Nomvalo remarked, noting that the situation among MKP members has reached a level where security assistance is crucial. He made a direct appeal to Mkhwanazi to deploy the PKTT to oversee the circumstances and uphold order.
The PKTT was formed to investigate politically motivated violence in KwaZulu-Natal, a province known for its history of severe political confrontations.
Nomvalo took the opportunity to address rumors regarding his political future, clarifying that he has not resigned from his position as a Member of Parliament. Recent reports had suggested he was about to leave his parliamentary role, but he explicitly denied these assertions.
“I remain a Member of Parliament and continue to serve the people,” he stated.
In addition to being an MP, Nomvalo confirmed his role as the Secretary-General of the MKP, a dual capacity that has raised eyebrows since the MKP’s constitution allegedly does not allow one person to hold both roles simultaneously.
Political analysts indicate that this arrangement might spark internal discussions within the party regarding governance, accountability, and the division of responsibilities between political leadership and parliamentary duties.
These events unfold as the MKP grapples with internal disputes in various regions nationwide, following its rapid political ascent leading up to the 2024 general elections.
Despite the mounting controversy, Nomvalo maintains that his priority is to stabilize the party in Mzimkhulu and ensure the safety of threatened members.
As of the time of publication, there had been no official response from either the KwaZulu-Natal SAPS or the MKP leadership regarding Nomvalo’s request for the PKTT’s deployment.
