The Border Management Authority intercepted a drug consignment worth nearly R1 billion at the Beitbridge border post.
A truck travelling from Zimbabwe to Beitbridge was identified, and when it arrived, BMA officials were waiting and immediately stopped and searched it. The truck was scanned using advanced scanning equipment, which revealed a hidden compartment.
After more than eight hours of dismantling the truck, officials found a substance confirmed to be methaqualone, also known as Abba, which is commonly used to manufacture mandrax.
The Hawks and K9 units were called to the scene, and 713,000 grams of the substance, valued at an estimated R998.2 million, were seized.
Three Malawian suspects were arrested and taken to the Musina Police Station. The Hawks are continuing with investigations.
