In the midst of escalating tensions in KwaZulu-Natal, King Misuzulu kaZwelithini has issued a clarion call to the Zulu people, imploring them to remain calm and denying the possibility of declaring war against foreign nationals.
When the king addressed the growing anger among some locals over the presence of foreign nationals in the province, particularly around schools such as Addington Primary in Durban, where complaints have spread about overcrowding, he was speaking at the 147th commemoration of the historic Battle of Isandlwana, which took place on Thursday near Nquthu.
As the level of frustration among Zulu people continues to rise, King Misuzulu, who has a great amount of cultural influence among the Zulu people, has stated that he will not defend any military or aggressive action taken against foreign nationals. In front of the people that had gathered, he declared, “During my time on the throne, I will not declare war against foreign nationals.” He went on to say that anyone who was eager for warfare would not have his approval.
Instead, the monarch placed an emphasis on engaging in conversation and finding peaceful solutions. He reminded his country that “everyone has a home” and suggested that there should be an encouragement for people who are not citizens of the country to return to their home nations. Noting that many South Africans have children with foreign partners, and that these youngsters are now a part of Zulu families, he acknowledged the complicated social relationships that have arisen between locals and migrants. He also accepted the fact that these ties have developed over time.
The monarch expressed his displeasure with the fact that certain Mzansi women are involved in relationships with foreign people, and he urged that children should be left with their mothers in situations like this. Not only did he advocate for stronger links with people from other countries, but he also advocated for stronger partnerships amongst the various cultures and tribes that exist within South Africa itself.
It is important to note that King Misuzulu emphasised that violence should be avoided and that traditional dialogue and respect must guide the way forward. His statements came against the backdrop of viral online messages and heightened emotions on both sides.
