Social media claims link Parliament secretary and Public Protector, but recusal followed

Social media posts have alleged that Parliament secretary Xolile George is romantically involved with Public Protector Advocate Kholeka Gcaleka. The posts claim that Gcaleka said she would not investigate George over accusations that he improperly raised his annual salary from around R2 million to R5.3 million, and suggest he is being protected by a powerful internal network.

The disputed salary increase has sparked public controversy and official examination. After the Democratic Alliance filed a formal complaint, Gcaleka publicly recused herself from the investigation. She cited a potential conflict of interest due to their personal relationship as the reason for stepping aside, which directly contradicts claims that she refused to probe the matter.

The social media claims have generated widespread online discussion, with many users questioning the ethics of close personal relationships between leaders of independent oversight institutions and senior public officials. Critics warn that such ties can undermine the independence and credibility of anti-corruption bodies, while others argue that recusal was the appropriate step to preserve the integrity of the investigation.

It is important to note that the allegations of a protective cartel and a deliberate refusal to investigate remain unverified claims made by a single online user. Independent oversight institutions and parliamentary bodies are expected to proceed with examining the salary adjustment. Attention is now focused on whether South Africa’s accountability mechanisms can properly manage the apparent conflict of interest and determine the validity of the contested pay package.
