We Are Not Criminals, Foreign Nationals Rejected Strong Allegations Linking Them To Criminal

Foreign nationals living and working along Mahatma Gandhi Road have strongly rejected allegations linking them to criminal activity, describing the claims as damaging, misleading, and rooted in harmful stereotypes.

The busy commercial strip in Durban known for its diverse mix of traders small businesses, and informal enterprises has recently come under scrutiny following reports suggesting that foreign-owned shops may be connected to illicit activities. However, several residents and business owners from different countries say they are being unfairly targeted without evidence.

Community representatives argue that such accusations not only tarnish their reputations but also put their safety at risk. “We are here to work and support our families,” said one shop owner, who requested anonymity out of fear of victimisation. “Labeling all of us as criminals is wrong and dangerous.”

Many foreign nationals emphasized their contributions to the local economy, noting that they create jobs, provide essential goods at competitive prices, and help sustain economic activity in underserved communities. They also pointed out that crime is a broader societal issue that should not be attributed to any single group.

Local advocacy groups have echoed these concerns, warning that unchecked rhetoric could fuel xenophobic tensions. 2015 Xenophobic Attacks in South Africa were cited as a stark reminder of how quickly misinformation and resentment can escalate into violence if not addressed responsibly.

Law enforcement authorities have not confirmed any specific link between foreign nationals in the area and organized criminal networks. Officials have urged the public to avoid generalizations and to report criminal activity through proper channels regardless of who is involved.

Meanwhile, efforts are underway to promote dialogue between local residents and foreign business owners. Community leaders say fostering understanding and cooperation is key to preventing conflict and building trust.

As tensions simmer foreign nationals along Mahatma Gandhi Road remain resolute in defending their integrity. They are calling for fairness, evidence-based discussions, and an end to sweeping accusations that threaten both livelihoods and social cohesion in one of Durban’s most vibrant corridors.
