The President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, has issued an appeal to foreign nationals who are currently residing in the country to respect the laws, customs, and constitutional principles of the country. He has also reaffirmed that the issue of illegal immigration will be dealt with in a decisive manner.

During the ceremonies of Freedom Day that took place in the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality in Bloemfontein, President Cyril Ramaphosa utilised the national stage to discuss immigration, South Africa’s international duties, and the significance of mutual respect between citizens and those who reside in the country.

According to the President, foreign people who are legally present in South Africa have a responsibility to follow the laws of the country and to respect its social customs and cultural traditions. His request was presented as an issue of reciprocity, and he stated that the same norms that South Africans would expect to be applied to those living within the borders of the country should also be applied to those living within the country.

Ramaphosa made the following statement: “Those who are here legally respect us as South Africans, respect our laws, respect our conventions, and respect our traditions, just as you would want us to respect the laws and traditions of your own country.”

The timing of his remarks coincides with the intensifying national discussion on immigration, border security, and the stresses that are being placed on public services. Ramaphosa made an effort to differentiate between persons who are lawfully present in South Africa and others who are there illegally and who make a positive contribution to the country’s society.

The President of South Africa made it quite plain that undocumented immigration would not be accepted, while at the same time reiterating South Africa’s adherence to constitutional rights and international law standards. He issued a stern warning that the authorities will take decisive action against illegal immigration, reiterating that the government is still dedicated to upholding the rule of law and preserving order.

A connection was also made between the matter and the democratic values of South Africa, with Ramaphosa stating that respect for the law is essential to the maintenance of social cohesion and national stability. He stated that the liberties of the nation, which are commemorated on Freedom Day, have their origins in constitutional principles that are applicable to all individuals who reside within the borders of the nation.

The words made by the President are expected to have a significant impact in light of the increased public concern regarding migration and law enforcement. This is especially true in light of the fact that the government is facing an increasing number of calls to tighten border controls and combat unlawful entrance.

At the same time, Ramaphosa emphasised South Africa’s broader duties as a member of the international community, highlighting the need to strike a balance between domestic issues and commitments imposed by global and regional agreements.

On Freedom Day, which is celebrated annually to honour the nation’s first democratic elections, which took place in 1994, people frequently use the opportunity to reflect on the nation’s achievements and difficulties. This year, Ramaphosa made use of the occasion to emphasise the importance of accountability, lawful behaviour, and mutual respect within the community.

In his presentation, he made it clear that South Africa will continue to welcome people who are legitimately residing and working in the country. However, he also made it clear that respect for the country’s laws and traditions is non-negotiable, and that transgressions linked to illegal immigration will be met with stern action from the government.
