National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola has condemned the destruction of property during a protest in the Eastern Cape town of KuGompo. More than 10 cars were set alight when protesters took to the streets to express anger over the crowning of a Nigerian traditional leader in the city, formerly known as East London.

Masemola said law enforcement would not tolerate such actions and that those involved are being investigated and sought by police. He added that additional officers, including public order police, have been deployed to bring the situation under control.

He made the remarks at a press conference where he announced the appointment of Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata as the new Eastern Cape provincial commissioner.

In Gauteng, a separate group of marchers protested outside the Nigerian High Commission. The group, operating under the name Progressive Forces, demanded clarity on the installation of the Igbo king in South Africa.

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Deputy Minister Prince Zolile Burns-Ncamashe told the SABC on Monday that the coronation was illegal and risked causing instability in the city. He said government leaders are scheduled to meet with the Nigerian High Commissioner next week to address the matter.
