Dr Nandipha Magudumana is mourning the death of her mother while in custody, adding a deeply personal tragedy to her ongoing legal battle linked to the high-profile Thabo Bester prison escape case.
According to Sunday World, Magudumana was informed of the passing of her mother, Nokuzola Sikeleni, by prison officials and social workers at the Bizzah Makhate Correctional Centre in Kroonstad. Sikeleni died on Thursday in Port Shepstone on KwaZulu-Natal’s south coast.
Family members say the news came as a shock. Her brother, Nkosinathi Sikeleni, confirmed that Magudumana is struggling to process the loss. “She is trying to come to terms with the loss of our mother, and we are hoping that she will be strong even though it is painful,” he said.
The family has since initiated an application for compassionate leave to allow her to attend the funeral. Under South Africa’s Correctional Services Act, such requests may be granted, but only after a thorough assessment of security risks, behavioural history, and other relevant factors.
Magudumana’s father, Zolile Sikeleni, expressed sorrow as the family prepares for the funeral. “It is sad that she died while their child was languishing in jail,” he said, highlighting the emotional toll of the situation.
Her legal representative, Machini Motloung, has also called on correctional authorities to provide psychological support to help her cope with the bereavement while in custody.
A spokesperson for the Department of Correctional Services confirmed that bereaved inmates may be considered for temporary release, but emphasized that each case is evaluated individually to ensure compliance with security protocols.
Magudumana, 38, remains in custody as she awaits trial on multiple serious charges, including aiding and abetting Bester’s escape, fraud, corruption, money laundering, arson, violation of a corpse, and defeating the ends of justice. She and Bester were arrested in Tanzania in April 2023 and subsequently extradited to South Africa.
A close family friend described the situation as “heartbreaking,” noting the added pain of grieving while incarcerated. “It is sad to be incarcerated and fail to bury your loved ones,” the friend said.
As funeral arrangements continue, the family now awaits a decision from correctional authorities—one that will determine whether Magudumana can briefly leave prison to bid farewell to her mother.
