Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune has delivered a scathing assessment of the club’s current squad, branding their display “totally disrespectful” following a heavy Soweto Derby defeat to Orlando Pirates.

Khune’s criticism comes in the aftermath of a comprehensive loss that exposed tactical, technical and psychological shortcomings within the Amakhosi ranks. In a fixture defined by intensity, rivalry and legacy, performance standards are subjected to heightened scrutiny. For a former captain who carried the weight of the derby for over a decade, the nature of the defeat clearly crossed a line.

Describing the performance as “disrespectful” goes beyond emotional reaction. Within the culture of Kaizer Chiefs, the Soweto Derby is more than a league fixture — it is a statement of identity. The match demands controlled aggression, defensive discipline and unwavering commitment. According to Khune’s assessment, those fundamentals were absent.

Orlando Pirates, in contrast, executed their game plan with precision. Their structured pressing disrupted Chiefs’ build-up play, while swift transitions exposed defensive gaps. Chiefs struggled to dictate midfield tempo and appeared vulnerable during recovery phases, repeatedly caught out of position. Such structural lapses in a high-stakes encounter inevitably draw sharp criticism.

Khune’s remarks echo growing frustration among sections of the Chiefs support base. Beyond the dropped points, derby defeats carry symbolic consequences, often affecting dressing-room confidence and intensifying scrutiny on both players and technical staff.

From a performance perspective, Chiefs’ defensive organisation and transitional awareness require urgent attention. Conceding multiple goals in a fixture of this magnitude points to systemic issues rather than isolated errors. Meanwhile, Pirates’ composed display under pressure further highlights the competitive gap between the Soweto rivals.

For Khune, effort and respect for the occasion are non-negotiable. In derby football, mistakes may be forgiven — a perceived lack of intensity is not. The response now rests firmly with the Chiefs squad, who must restore credibility through performance rather than words.
