Major General Anthony Gopaul, Acting Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Crime Detection in KwaZulu-Natal, appeared before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on Tuesday.

The commission is investigating allegations of crime, political influence, and corruption within South Africa’s criminal justice system, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal.

Led by evidence leader Advocate Ofentse Motlhasedi, the hearing focused on Gopaul’s role in overseeing crime detection, decision-making in high-profile cases, and the management of sensitive investigations. Questions also touched on internal accountability and adherence to law enforcement standards.

The Madlanga Commission was established to examine claims of undue political interference, abuse of authority, and systemic corruption affecting policing and prosecution in the province.

Gopaul’s testimony is part of a broader inquiry into whether senior officials have upheld their constitutional duties or contributed to alleged misconduct.

The commission’s public hearings continue to draw national attention as it works to uncover facts and propose reforms to strengthen the criminal justice system. More witnesses are expected to testify in the coming days.
