A recent social media clash between EFF leader Julius Malema and musician Daliwonga has spotlighted the occasional tensions between South African celebrities and politicians. While the exact cause of their spat remains unclear, it’s not the first such public feud.
Here’s a look at other notable celebrity-politician conflicts:
Robert Marawa vs. Fikile Mbalula
The sports broadcaster blamed then-Sports Minister Mbalula for South Africa losing the bid to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The two later reconciled with help from musician Oskido.
Helen Zille vs. Anele Mdoda
During a 947 radio interview, DA federal council chair Helen Zille arrived late and bristled under questioning from host Anele Mdoda. Zille questioned whether Mdoda was the “spokesperson of black people” and suggested a caller had better questions.
Sizwe Dhlomo vs. Floyd Shivambu
After Shivambu left the EFF, he warned media personality Sizwe Dhlomo not to comment on his political career on social media. Dhlomo responded with “or what?”—leading Shivambu to block him.
These clashes often play out publicly, blending personal differences with political and social commentary.
