Four suspected members of a vehicle theft syndicate were arrested in Norwood on Saturday after police recovered a stolen Toyota Fortuner linked to a series of crimes targeting cricket fans.
The operation involved Norwood SAPS, Bramley SAPS, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department, and private security. Authorities had been monitoring the syndicate since December, following thefts of Toyota Fortuners, Hiluxes, and Ford Rangers around the Wanderers Stadium during matches.
Police intercepted the suspects as they attempted to steal a second vehicle. Found in their possession were car jammers, computer boxes, false registration plates, and other breaking tools. One plate was linked to a vehicle stolen in Springs in November.
All four suspects, believed to be from Soweto, are detained at Norwood SAPS facing charges related to possession of jamming devices and carjacking equipment. The recovered Fortuner has been impounded.
Residents are urged to report suspicious activity to SAPS.
