Former uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party deputy president John Hlophe stated that he submitted a resignation letter to party leader Jacob Zuma and the MK Party in December 2025, which was rejected. Hlophe noted that, despite the rejection, no disciplinary hearing has been scheduled to date. The comments were made amid ongoing internal disputes within the party.

Hlophe was suspended from his role in the MK Party on November 5, 2025, following leadership changes in Parliament where he replaced the chief whip without authorization. In response to the suspension, Hlophe requested termination of his membership rather than a precautionary measure, expressing frustration over the process. A leaked message from Hlophe indicated he would not attend plenary sessions pending resolution.

The MK Party has experienced multiple leadership shifts since its formation in December 2023, including changes in secretary-general positions and other key roles. Hlophe, who joined the party after his impeachment as a judge in March 2024, also resigned from the Judicial Service Commission in November 2025. The party withdrew his nomination to the commission following the suspension.

Public reactions on social media have highlighted the tensions, with some users discussing the implications for party unity. No official response from Zuma or the MK Party regarding Hlophe’s recent statements has been issued as of January 16, 2026. The situation continues to evolve amid broader leadership challenges.
