Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) President Julius Malema addressed the media on Thursday during an official EFF press conference, clarifying persistent rumours linking him to Cat Matlala. The briefing, held at the party’s headquarters, drew journalists eager to hear Malema’s explanation regarding the widely circulated speculation.

Malema began by directly denying any familial connection to Cat Matlala. He explained that while his wife shares the same surname as Matlala, she is not related to her. “I am not related to Cat Matlala. Cat Matlala and my wife share a surname, but my wife is not related to Cat Matlala,” Malema said, emphasising the distinction.

The clarification comes after months of social media speculation and misinformation, which suggested a potential personal or political connection between the EFF leader and Matlala. Malema said these rumours were unfounded and that he felt it was important to set the record straight.

During the press briefing, Malema also stressed that the focus of the EFF should remain on policy, governance, and the needs of South Africans, rather than personal or family associations. He highlighted the importance of addressing national issues such as unemployment, housing, and education, asserting that public attention should be directed toward solutions for the people, rather than unverified gossip.

Malema’s approach combined clarity with his usual assertiveness, leaving no room for ambiguity about the matter. By addressing the claim publicly, he aimed to prevent further confusion and to ensure that the media and the public were not misled by speculation.

The press briefing attracted several journalists and media representatives who asked questions about both the personal clarification and the broader agenda of the EFF. Malema used the opportunity to reaffirm the party’s commitment to holding government officials accountable, fighting corruption, and advocating for economic freedom for all South Africans.

Political analysts have noted that Malema’s prompt clarification may be a strategic move to quell rumours before they gain traction, especially given the EFF’s active engagement in local politics and high-profile campaigns. By addressing the issue directly, Malema has sought to maintain public confidence in his leadership and prevent distractions from the party’s broader objectives.

The clarification has since circulated widely on social media, with many praising Malema for his openness and transparency. Others have noted that it underscores the extent to which public figures in South Africa are subject to scrutiny, not just for their political actions but also for their personal and family associations.

Malema concluded the briefing by reiterating that the EFF remains focused on economic transformation, social justice, and the empowerment of marginalised communities. The clarification regarding Cat Matlala is expected to put an end to speculation, allowing the party and its leader to maintain focus on political priorities and upcoming campaigns.

The press conference confirmed that while public figures often face unfounded rumours, direct communication remains key to maintaining credibility and focus on issues that matter to the public.
