Controversial Limpopo rapper Shebeshxt has been named Thobela FM’s Song of the Year for his track “Rato Laka,” featuring Zee Nxumalo.
The win comes as the artist, whose real name is Lehlogonolo Katlego Chauke, remains in custody facing charges including attempted murder, assault, and illegal possession of a firearm. His bail was denied in mid-December.
Despite his legal troubles, the song—a street anthem produced by Naqua SA—resonated strongly with listeners, topping the station’s annual countdown. Reaction on social media has been divided, with some fans celebrating the win while others expressed concern over his situation.
The Limpopo Artists Movement has noted that Shebeshxt’s arrest has impacted promoters and others in the local entertainment economy.
Meanwhile, other stations also announced their year-end winners: Makhadzi won Phalaphala FM’s title with “Sesi Ka Rose,” Shandesh topped Capricorn FM with “Sdudla or Slender,” and Ukhozi FM crowned Umafikizolo’s “Uzoncengwa Unyoko.” Sam Deep’s “Shela” was named South Africa’s overall Song of the Year after sweeping four national stations.
