From diplomatic clashes to courtroom outbursts, 2025 provided no shortage of memorable political statements in South Africa. Here are five quotes that captured the year’s drama.

1. “Turn the lights down, turn the lights down.”
– Former US President Donald Trump
During a tense Oval Office meeting in May, President Cyril Ramaphosa attempted to counter claims of “white genocide.” Trump responded by asking staff to dim the lights before screening a video montage of Julius Malema’s statements. The moment became a symbol of strained US-South Africa relations.

2. “I will die for this badge. I will fight until the end, whatever the end is.”
– KZN Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi

In a July press conference flanked by armed officers, Mkhwanazi accused Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and senior officials of ties to criminal syndicates. His declaration made him a rallying figure and led to the formation of two major inquiries into police corruption.

3. “Supernatural powers to make people disappear.”
– Mayibuye Afrika leader Floyd Shivambu

Shivambu claimed he was ousted as MK Party secretary-general after a bizarre intelligence report accused him of witchcraft. He labelled the MK a “family, tribal and ethnic project” and called his former political home, the EFF, a “cult.”

4. “This is what happens in a South Africa run by blacks.”
– Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng

The Senzo Meyiwa trial judge made the remark after criticizing the conduct of black legal professionals in his courtroom. The comment sparked widespread calls for a judicial investigation, though he later apologized.

5. “South Africans, you are Sodom and Gomorrah.”
– Former Police Minister Bheki Cele

At the memorial of former ambassador Nathi Mthethwa, Cele condemned public criticism of the late minister, invoking the biblical cities destroyed for their wickedness. The outburst highlighted deep political and social divisions.

As the year closes, these statements reflect a period of intense scrutiny, controversy, and public confrontation in the national arena.
