KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has stated that the ongoing Madlanga Commission must lead to concrete changes in South Africa’s criminal justice system.
Speaking on Tuesday during a festive season police operation, Mkhwanazi said he is pleased the deep-seated problems within the system are being aired publicly. He expressed hope that the transparency of the commission would allow society to help develop solutions and judge its outcomes.
Mkhwanazi sparked the inquiry in July with an explosive media briefing alleging collusion between criminals, the judiciary, politicians, and senior police officials. He said he does not regret going public, explaining that police feel “powerless” when those meant to uphold justice become part of the problem.
He emphasized that the commission’s final report must change the status quo, stating a collective desire for a better and more effective criminal justice system.
Gen. Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is confident the final Madlanga Commission report will produce meaningful solutions to challenges within the criminal justice system. Mkhwanazi maintains that his decision to publicly address the nation in July was a good move. #Newzroom405 pic.twitter.com/ax5DfzrZe7
