Intense discussions are underway within the African National Congress (ANC) regarding the future of General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, the senior police official whose contract renewal has sparked division among party leaders. High-ranking members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) reportedly debated whether President Cyril Ramaphosa should allow Mkhwanazi’s term to lapse without extension, citing the need for fresh leadership in the security sector.
Sources reveal that a growing faction within the ANC has raised concerns over Mkhwanazi’s performance, arguing that his leadership no longer aligns with the party’s current objectives. Critics within the NEC have pushed for his removal, while others have defended his tenure, leading to a deadlock in the recent meeting. No final decision was reached, leaving the matter unresolved.

The ANC has since dismissed claims that external forces influenced the push to oust Mkhwanazi. In an online statement, the party denied the allegations and urged the public to disregard speculative reports. However, the debate has exposed deeper tensions within the ANC, with critics suggesting that political considerations, rather than merit, may be shaping the appointment of top security officials.
The final decision on Mkhwanazi’s future rests with the Presidency and Cabinet once his contract expires. Until then, the outcome will depend on ongoing behind-the-scenes negotiations. The situation highlights the ANC’s internal struggles over leadership and governance as the party grapples with competing factions ahead of a critical political period.
Observers warn that the handling of Mkhwanazi’s position could signal broader shifts in the ANC’s approach to security sector appointments, with implications for both party unity and public confidence in law enforcement leadership.
