The criminal case against businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala has taken an important step forward. The case has now been officially moved to the Gauteng High Court. This means a higher court will handle the trial because the charges are very serious.

Matlala is facing the court together with other accused people. They are charged with crimes such as attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder. These charges are connected to a shooting that happened in 2023. According to police, the shooting was planned, and the people accused are believed to have worked together.

Attempted murder means trying to kill someone but failing. Conspiracy to commit murder means planning with others to kill someone, even if the plan does not succeed. These are very serious crimes in South Africa and can lead to long prison sentences if someone is found guilty.

The case has been in the lower courts for a long time while investigations continued. Now that it has been transferred to the High Court, it shows that the state believes it has enough evidence to continue with a full trial. High Court cases usually take longer and include many witnesses and legal arguments.

The trial is expected to start around 29 January 2026. This date may still change, but it gives an idea of when the case could begin. Until then, Matlala will stay in jail. The court has already refused to give him bail. Bail is when a person is allowed to go home while waiting for trial, usually after paying money. The court decided he should remain in custody.

Matlala is a well-known and controversial businessman, and the case has attracted a lot of public attention. Many people are watching closely to see how the trial will go. The court will listen to evidence from both the prosecution and the defence before making a final decision.

For now, Matlala and his co-accused are still considered innocent until the court proves otherwise. The High Court trial will play a big role in deciding what really happened during the 2023 shooting and who should be held responsible.
