Public trust was strained during the Madlanga Commission on Wednesday after Police Minister Senzo Mchunu was seen receiving a brown envelope while testifying.
The moment sparked immediate speculation on social media, with many viewers questioning the envelope’s contents. Brown envelopes are commonly associated with illicit payments in public perception, leading to accusations of possible bribery or an attempt to influence the inquiry.
Minister Mchunu later stated that the envelope contained a list of individuals with knowledge about the disbanding of a special police task force. However, the manner of the handover left many unconvinced. Critics suggested using a transparent folder would have avoided suspicion.
The incident intensified scrutiny on Mchunu’s testimony, which was already under pressure. Some social media users also questioned why he was wearing an earpiece, insinuating he was being coached. The commission continues amid a climate of heightened public doubt.
