Matlala Hit Back At MP Dereleen James – That Is A Lie, Why Are You Raising Your Voice?

A tense confrontation occurred during Friday’s Ad Hoc Committee session when businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and ActionSA Member of Parliament Dereleen James engaged in an acrimonious exchange, each accusing the other of dishonesty as tempers momentarily flared.

The confrontation commenced when Matlala abruptly rejected a line of questioning, replying firmly, “First of all, that is false, and second, I do not understand why you are raising your voice over this.” His visible exasperation elicited murmurs throughout the committee room.

James, unwilling to withdraw, responded with equal vigour:

You are dishonest because you are worth my raising my voice.

The direct allegation promptly heightened tensions, prompting the committee chairperson to intervene and restore order. However, Matlala was not finished with his defence.

“No, you are also mistaken because what you are asserting is not accurate,” he retorted, reaffirming his stance and asserting that the MP’s claims misrepresented his testimony.

The exchange underscored the escalating confrontational nature of the proceedings, which have examined Matlala’s purported cash payments to senior police officials, his private security arrangements, and his participation in multiple high-profile legal cases. Members of Parliament have continuously alleged that he is evasive or inconsistent, whereas Matlala maintains that he is the subject of misinformation and political manoeuvring.

James, recognised for her assertive interrogating approach, challenged Matlala regarding inconsistencies in his previous statements, eliciting an emotional exchange. Observers observed that neither party seemed inclined to yield territory, rendering the committee session among the most contentious to date.

Following the confrontation, the chairperson reminded all participants to uphold decorum, underscoring that personal exchanges compromise the integrity of the inquiry. However, the critical moment further highlighted the political and public scrutiny surrounding Matlala’s testimony.

The committee is anticipated to persist in examining financial transactions, purported preferential treatment, and Matlala’s associations with senior security officials in the upcoming days. Whether the acrimonious exchange influences the tone of subsequent sessions remains uncertain; however, Friday’s confrontation underscored one fact: the investigation is escalating, and tempers are deteriorating as pressure increases.
