ANC breaks silence on Senzo Mchunu’s decision to step aside amid corruption claims

The African National Congress (ANC) has confirmed that Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu was prepared to step aside from his position following the emergence of corruption allegations against him.

The party’s spokesperson said Mchunu had communicated his willingness to comply with the ANC’s step-aside resolution, which requires any member formally charged with a criminal offence to voluntarily vacate their position until the matter is resolved. The ANC reiterated that the principle is meant to protect both the integrity of the organisation and the credibility of public office bearers.

“The Minister expressed his readiness to step aside should formal charges be brought against him. This aligns with the ANC’s firm stance that members must lead by example when facing serious allegations,” the spokesperson stated.

The confirmation comes amid growing public pressure for transparency and accountability within government ranks, particularly in the security cluster. Mchunu, who has not yet been charged, is reportedly under scrutiny in connection with procurement-related complaints currently being investigated by the relevant authorities.

Political analysts say the ANC’s handling of the matter will serve as a key test of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s ongoing anti-corruption drive, which has faced criticism for perceived inconsistency in enforcement.

As of now, Mchunu continues to perform his ministerial duties while awaiting further developments in the investigation. The ANC says it will continue to monitor the situation closely and act in accordance with its policies.
