During a recent engagement at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), Dr. Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, a Member of Parliament for the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), delivered a compelling critique of former President Jacob Zuma. Zuma’s capacity to effect change in the present day was called into question by Ndlozi, who emphasized his failure to fulfill key promises during his lengthy tenure in power in a passionate speech.

“Let us not be deceived.” President Jacob Zuma was afforded the opportunity to serve for nine years as president and ten years as president of the ANC. Did he acquire the land? False. Did investors attend? False. Was there a decrease in unemployment? Addressing a multitude of students and supporters, Ndlozi declared, “No.”

The comments are made in the context of ongoing discussions regarding economic development and land reform in South Africa. Ndlozi contested the former president’s assertion that he possessed the solutions to the nation’s most urgent issues, particularly in light of his age and the absence of tangible accomplishments during his tenure in office. “Is he going to persuade me that what he was unable to accomplish at the age of 63 can be accomplished at the age of 83?” he inquired, eliciting mirth and applause from the audience.

In particular, the EFF has been vocal in its criticism of Zuma, particularly in relation to the persistent issues of unemployment and land inequality in South Africa, as well as the impact of his presidency on the economy. Ndlozi’s speech at UKZN not only served as a direct rebuttal to Zuma’s legacy but also underscored the broader frustrations of many young South Africans who feel betrayed by the political leadership of previous administrations.

“Let us not be misled. President Jacob Zuma had his chance – 9 years as president and 10 years as president of the ANC. Did he take the land? No. Did investors come? No. Did unemployment go down? No. Today, he’s going to convince me that what he couldn’t do at 63 can be done at… pic.twitter.com/YOFrWzcJ1K

Ndlozi also appealed to the youth to remain active and engaged in the political process, encouraging them to demand accountability from leaders who have failed to fulfill their promises. “We must ensure that we hold our leaders accountable and learn from the past.” He further stated, “We must prevent history from repeating itself.”

Ndlozi’s remarks emphasize the increasing impatience of the younger generation for decisive action and substantive change, as discussions regarding economic empowerment and land reform continue to dominate South African politics and discourse. The EFF is committed to establishing itself as a champion for these issues by advocating for policies that directly address the needs and aspirations of the youth.

The remarks of Ndlozi are resonant with a substantial portion of the electorate, which is becoming increasingly disillusioned with the promises made by established political figures. This underscores the urgent need for new approaches to address the challenges that South Africa is currently confronting.
