President Cyril Ramaphosa and the South African government have lost their bid to delay a R167 million constitutional damages case brought by families and survivors of apartheid-era victims.
The Gauteng High Court in Pretoria dismissed the state’s application to indefinitely postpone the matter, which was filed by 25 families who accuse the government of failing to prosecute apartheid-era crimes despite Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) recommendations.
Judge Nicolene Janse van Nieuwenhuizen criticised the state for causing years of delay and then seeking more time, calling it “rather ironic.”
The Foundation for Human Rights welcomed the ruling, saying it marked a crucial step toward long-overdue justice for victims’ families.
