The HAWKS have confirmed a search and seizure operation at the headquarters of Johannesburg City Power linked to a R67 million purchase order for electricity transformers that were paid for but never delivered.
City Power has a long history of procurement irregularities, with past audits flagging weak financial controls and irregular expenditure. Transformers are a crucial part of the city’s electricity network, and their non-delivery has worsened ongoing power outages affecting thousands of residents.
Sources indicate that the raid is part of a broader investigation into fraud and corruption at the municipal utility. While no arrests have been confirmed, further actions are possible as the HAWKS continue their probe. City Power has not yet issued a statement regarding the operation.
This development adds to growing public concerns about accountability and transparency in municipal-owned entities, particularly as Johannesburg residents continue to face unreliable electricity supply.
