KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has opened a case of defeating the ends of justice against individuals who allegedly attempted to block the Political Killings Task Team from uncovering corruption in Gauteng.
Mkhwanazi testified on Thursday before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry at the Brigitte Mabandla Justice College in Pretoria. He explained that the KZN task team was called in by Crime Intelligence boss Dumisani Khumalo to help Gauteng counterintelligence investigate a series of high-profile murders.
However, according to Mkhwanazi, their work quickly met resistance. He pointed to a letter from Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, instructing that the KZN task team be disbanded, as an apparent attempt to prevent them from exposing deep-seated corruption within Gauteng’s criminal justice system.
Despite the instruction, the task team continues to operate. Mkhwanazi said he would not let the disbandment order go unchallenged.
“The defeating the ends of justice case that I reported [is] against the people who were involved in the stopping of this investigation,” he testified.
The commissioner declined to name those implicated but suggested he might do so when concluding his testimony.
