Helen Zille Tells Joburg to “Ask Ramaphosa” as She Accepts DA Mayoral Nomination

Helen Zille, the Democratic Alliance’s newly nominated candidate for Johannesburg mayor, has thrown down the gauntlet to the ANC, telling voters to take their cue from President Cyril Ramaphosa himself.

Speaking shortly after her nomination, Zille highlighted Ramaphosa’s own admission earlier this year that municipalities under DA control tend to outperform those governed by the ANC.

“Joburg residents don’t need to take my word for it — the President of South Africa has already said it himself,” Zille remarked. “The DA knows how to deliver essential services efficiently, honestly and responsibly. That is exactly what this city needs right now.”

Her comments come at a time when Johannesburg faces mounting criticism over failing infrastructure, unreliable electricity supply, and declining service delivery. The DA hopes to capitalise on growing voter frustration, positioning Zille as a reform candidate with a proven track record in governance.

Analysts say her nomination signals the DA’s intent to mount a serious challenge in Gauteng’s economic hub, long seen as a critical prize for any party seeking national dominance.

Whether voters will respond to Zille’s appeal and Ramaphosa’s unintended endorsement, remains to be seen.
