Look: Shivambu Faces Heat After Bold Promise to Restore Africa’s Dignity Officials’ Meetings

Floyd Shivambu, who is now president of Mayibuye iAfrika and a former secretary-general of the MKP, has been the target of intense online criticism following his blistering speech at Monday’s Mayibuye National Officials’ Meeting, in which he pledged to “restore Africa’s dignity, wealth, freedom, and heritage.”

Party officials and supporters gathered for what was advertised as an opportunity to reflect on the movement’s achievements “thus far and the journey ahead.” “We know what we are doing and we will bring back Afrika’s dignity,” Shivambu declared, using the opportunity to convey confidence in Mayibuye’s agenda. “May Africa be blessed!” The rallying cry was well-received in the room, but the internet was less kind.

Social media users criticised Shivambu for what they saw as his lack of action on South Africa’s severe economic and social problems. A number of people criticised the speech, calling it political theatre and a diversion from more serious issues with government oversight. “Another rallying cry, another catchphrase.

Exactly where are the openings for employment? How can I get my service? One critic expressed a common sentiment on X (formerly Twitter). But his backers backed Shivambu’s position, praising his remarks as a statement of African pride in the face of decades of oppression. Floyd makes a valid point; Africa needs to regain its pride. Another user expressed that as the vision that Mayibuye represents.

The conflicting reactions, according to analysts, show how challenging it is for new movements like Mayibuye to strike a balance between symbolic rhetoric and real political answers. Many South Africans are still waiting for real solutions to issues like corruption, poverty, and unemployment, even while liberation-era slogans like Mayibuye iAfrika touch a nerve with others.

As one of the most prominent figures in the movement, Shivambu is increasingly being watched by many, and the internet backlash has just added to that. How Mayibuye positions itself in the months ahead will determine whether his ambitious pledges lead to greater support or more criticism.
