Advocate Tembeka Ngcukaitobi has delivered a sharp and unambiguous assessment of the sensational Thabo Bester saga, emphasizing the seriousness of the matter and rejecting attempts to water down its gravity. Speaking during proceedings highlighted in the recently released Netflix production, Ngcukaitobi reiterated that Bester’s departure from prison was nothing less than an escape.

“So they have said Thabo Bester escaped from prison and again you know this is a serious court, we are all adults. The man was serving life in prison, he got out of it, he was not released by the system. So he escaped – means let’s not play around,” Ngcukaitobi stated firmly.

Bester, known as the so-called “Facebook rapist” and convicted murderer, made headlines globally after it was discovered that he had orchestrated a daring breakout from the Mangaung Correctional Centre. The escape involved elaborate deception, including the use of a burnt body to fake his death in a fire inside his cell. For months, authorities were outmaneuvered as Bester lived in luxury outside the walls of prison before being recaptured.

Ngcukaitobi’s remarks serve as a reminder that attempts to soften or distort the narrative undermine both the judicial process and public trust. His choice of words underscores the stark reality: Bester was never legally freed; he evaded the system entirely.

Turning to Bester’s partner, Dr. Nandipha Magudumana, Ngcukaitobi also pointed out the troubling way her flight from South Africa has been described. “When they talk of Dr. Nandipha Magudumana they say she surreptitiously left South Africa,” he noted.

Dr. Magudumana, a once-respected medical doctor, has faced intense public scrutiny and criminal charges linked to aiding Bester. Her involvement – from allegedly assisting in his escape to fleeing the country with him – has been a focal point of both the investigation and the documentary series. Ngcukaitobi’s statement challenges the tendency to cloak her actions in vague or diluted terminology, stressing the need for clarity and accountability.

The Bester and Magudumana saga has sparked debates on corruption, security lapses, and complicity within South Africa’s correctional system. Ngcukaitobi’s intervention ensures that the legal framing remains precise, leaving no room for euphemisms that could obscure the truth.
