A police constable and his 18-year-old nephew have been found dead following a day-long hostage situation in Mamelodi East. The incident began on Tuesday morning as a family dispute and ended tragically just before midnight.

The constable, identified as 32-year-old Thapelo Mashigo, had been holding his 69-year-old mother and nephew hostage inside a house. Police negotiators and Special Task Force operatives were deployed to the scene.

After hours of negotiation, the constable released his elderly mother at 11:00 PM. She received medical treatment on the scene before being transported to a hospital.

However, shortly before midnight, two gunshots were heard from inside the house. Upon entering, law enforcement discovered the bodies of Constable Mashigo and his nephew, both with fatal gunshot wounds.

The police have opened cases of murder and kidnapping. The incident will also be investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

Constable Mashigo had been a member of the South African Police Service since 2019 and was based at the Boschkop Police Station. Colleagues and the community have been left shocked by the event. SAPS Employee Health and Wellness officials are providing psychosocial support to the family and affected officers.

The tragedy has raised questions about the stress faced by frontline officers and the need for stronger support systems to prevent such incidents.
