The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) has launched an investigation into allegations involving a senior member of the City of Johannesburg’s mayoral committee (MMC), following claims that he solicited and received facilitation fees totaling R186,000 from a private housing developer.

According to law enforcement sources, the MMC allegedly requested payments in exchange for expediting approvals for a low-cost housing development in the city’s south. Investigators believe the funds were transferred over several months into accounts linked to individuals associated with the official. The developer has since become a whistleblower, providing evidence to authorities.

Brigadier Thandi Mbambo, Hawks spokesperson, confirmed that evidence had been gathered and further interviews were underway. Once the inquiry is complete, a docket will be submitted to the National Prosecuting Authority.

Political leaders, including ActionSA and the Democratic Alliance, have urged swift action, calling for the MMC’s suspension to safeguard public confidence. Meanwhile, residents awaiting affordable housing have voiced frustration at delays caused by the scandal. The MMC has denied wrongdoing, describing the allegations as politically motivated.
