Former African National Congress (ANC) national spokesperson Pule Mabe is scheduled to appear at the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday morning. He will be joined by six co-accused, all facing charges of fraud, theft, and money laundering.

The charges relate to allegations that Mabe and his associates misused government contracts to divert millions of rands. Investigators claim they used front companies to win state contracts and then channeled the money for personal use.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed the charges on Tuesday after a lengthy investigation by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Unit. NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said, “We believe we have a strong case to present before the court.”

Mabe served as the ANC’s national spokesperson from 2018 to 2022. His trial is seen as an important test for holding high-level political figures accountable for corruption. Sources close to his legal team say he will plead not guilty and claims the charges are politically motivated.

Due to the high profile of the case, security will be tight at the courthouse. Police are preparing for possible protests, and media coverage is expected to be extensive.

Legal experts predict a long and complex trial, given the amount of financial evidence and number of witnesses involved.

The ANC has distanced itself from Mabe, noting that he no longer holds an official position in the party. In a statement, the party said it would allow the legal process to take its course.

The case is being closely watched and could set a precedent for how corruption cases involving politicians are handled in South Africa. Wednesday’s appearance marks the start of one of the year’s most prominent corruption trials.
