Jacob Zuma Praises KZN Police Chief, Stirring New Political Controversy

Former President Jacob Zuma has caused a new political storm by publicly praising KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. In a surprising statement, Zuma called Mkhwanazi a “highly qualified whistleblower,” comparing him to Arthur Fraser, the former spy boss who exposed the Phala Phala scandal involving President Cyril Ramaphosa.

This comparison is highly significant. By linking Mkhwanazi to Fraser—a deeply controversial figure—Zuma has placed the police commissioner at the center of South Africa’s most divisive political battles.

Political analysts suggest Zuma’s comments are strategic and could have major consequences. They position Mkhwanazi as a figure resisting state corruption and reignite old tensions within the ruling ANC party and law enforcement agencies. This has led to speculation that Zuma may be hinting at future explosive revelations from within the police service.

The statement triggered an immediate reaction on social media. Zuma’s supporters praised him for speaking truth to power, while his critics accused him of manipulating state officials for his own political gain.

For Commissioner Mkhwanazi, Zuma’s public endorsement is a double-edged sword. It may raise his profile among those demanding accountability, but it also risks pulling him into a political conflict he did not seek.

Zuma’s carefully chosen words have once again raised the political stakes, leaving the nation to wonder if this is mere political theater or a warning of another major scandal to come. One thing remains certain: when Zuma speaks, it guarantees a significant and divisive reaction across South Africa.
