Parliament has formed a committee to finalize the terms of reference for an investigation into serious corruption allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. The claims include political interference and operational sabotage within the South African Police Service (SAPS).

During a virtual meeting on Thursday, the ad hoc committee, led by ANC MP Molapi Lekganyane, reviewed a 12-page document containing inputs from various political parties. The discussion focused on whether the document accurately reflected their positions ahead of the inquiry.

EFF leader Julius Malema raised concerns about bias, claiming that parliamentary staff excluded his party’s submissions while including those of the ANC.

“Our inputs are not there, and we will not allow this to continue,” Malema said. “The staff is partisan—when the ANC speaks, they type, but when we speak, they ignore us.”

Parliamentary legal advisor Andile Tetyana responded that he had the EFF’s input but clarified that the document before the committee only included certain parties’ submissions.

Lekganyane urged calm and stated that the committee would invite further input from relevant parties before finalizing the document.

The DA’s Glynnis Breytenbach emphasized the need to determine the scope of the allegations, including whether any misconduct or corruption had taken place within SAPS.

Submissions from the MK Party and ActionSA are still pending. Lekganyane noted that the document remains preliminary until all parties agree on its contents.

The inquiry is expected to proceed once the terms of reference are finalized.
