In a surprising turn of events, sources claim that Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has been holding undisclosed meetings with former President Jacob Zuma. The alleged discussions reportedly center on forming a faction to challenge President Cyril Ramaphosa’s leadership within the African National Congress (ANC).

The claims have fueled speculation about growing tensions within the ruling party, with some fearing a potential power struggle.

Possible Alliance Against Ramaphosa?

Insiders suggest that Lesufi, a key figure in Gauteng politics, is working with Zuma to gather support against Ramaphosa. The talks allegedly focus on strategies to weaken Ramaphosa’s influence ahead of future ANC leadership contests.

A source familiar with the matter said, “Lesufi is unhappy with Ramaphosa’s approach to corruption and economic reforms. He believes the party needs a stronger direction, and Zuma is advising him on how to push for change.”

ANC Denies the Claims

The ANC has dismissed the reports, calling them false. Party spokesperson Pule Mabe stated that the ANC remains united under Ramaphosa’s leadership. Other senior officials also denied any plot, urging the party to focus on South Africa’s economic challenges instead of internal conflicts.

Concerns Over Lesufi’s Political Moves

Despite the denials, some within the ANC are wary of Lesufi’s growing influence. A senior party member, speaking anonymously, said, “Lesufi is ambitious. If these reports about him teaming up with Zuma are true, it could deepen divisions in the ANC.”

Zuma’s Continued Influence

Though Zuma left office in 2018, his supporters remain a powerful faction within the ANC. His rumored involvement in efforts to oppose Ramaphosa has raised concerns about further splits in the party.

Political analyst John Matiso noted, “Zuma’s influence, combined with Lesufi’s ambitions, could create a serious challenge. If the ANC becomes more divided, it risks losing even more public trust.”

What This Means for the ANC

The reported tensions come at a difficult time for the ANC, which is already struggling with declining popularity. Analysts warn that internal conflicts could weaken the party’s ability to govern effectively.

“If these divisions grow, the ANC could lose credibility,” Matiso added. “Voters want stability, not another leadership battle.”

What Happens Next?

As rumors continue, attention is on whether Lesufi and Zuma will take further steps against Ramaphosa. If confirmed, their actions could trigger political instability, affecting both the ANC and South Africa’s leadership.

For now, the situation remains uncertain. The coming months will show whether Ramaphosa’s leadership can withstand the challenge or if the ANC will face another major internal rift.
