Patriotic Alliance leader and government minister Gayton McKenzie has opened up about his family background amid growing calls for accountability over an allegedly racist tweet from his past that recently resurfaced.
McKenzie revealed his father had light skin and blue eyes – which he called “China eyes” – prompting childhood questions about their origins. His father explained that McKenzie’s grandfather was Japanese and his grandmother was Irish. On his mother’s side, McKenzie comes from a black Sotho family, which he says explains his fluency in the Sotho language. The family speaks Afrikaans on his father’s side.
These personal disclosures come as McKenzie faces intense public scrutiny. The rediscovered tweet, alleged to contain racist content, has sparked outrage on social media, with some political figures demanding his removal from cabinet.
Political analyst Professor Dirk Kotze from Unisa argues that public figures must be held accountable for past statements, even those made before entering politics. “Leaders should set an example and avoid divisive language,” Kotze stated.
While McKenzie hasn’t directly addressed the controversial tweet, his discussion of his multicultural heritage has fueled broader conversations about race, identity and political accountability in South Africa. The minister’s background highlights the country’s complex racial history, even as he faces criticism over his past remarks.
