The African National Congress (ANC) is facing internal divisions over whether to retain General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi as a top police official. Reports suggest that during a recent National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, some members pushed President Cyril Ramaphosa not to renew Mkhwanazi’s contract when it expires later this year.

Sources say a faction within the ANC has raised concerns about Mkhwanazi’s performance and whether he fits the party’s current direction. While some members called for his removal, others defended his position, leading to heated discussions. No final decision was made, leaving the matter unresolved.

The ANC has denied claims that the NEC instructed Ramaphosa to fire Mkhwanazi. In an online statement, the party dismissed the reports as “unverified rumors” and urged the public not to believe misleading information.

The debate highlights growing tensions within the ANC over leadership in the security sector. Critics question whether political motives are influencing decisions about law enforcement roles. As discussions continue, the outcome could signal how the party handles high-level appointments amid internal disagreements.

For now, Mkhwanazi’s future remains uncertain, with the ANC yet to make an official announcement. The situation underscores the challenges of balancing performance, loyalty, and political strategy in key government positions.
