MPs Demand KZN Police Chief Testify on Corruption Claims Amid Minister’s Leave

Members of Parliament (MPs) are calling for KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi to appear before a special committee to back his claims of corruption and interference within the police and judiciary.

The push comes as Police Minister Senzo Mchunu faces allegations of interfering in investigations. Mchunu is currently on leave, but Parliament’s legal advisor confirmed he can still be summoned.

MPs want a dedicated committee to investigate Mkhwanazi’s claims without overlapping with a separate judicial inquiry. “We need to hear directly from General Mkhwanazi,” said justice committee member Sibonelo Nomvalo. The National Assembly will finalize the committee’s setup next week.

Meanwhile, in eThekwini, a man was killed after being electrocuted at a power station on South Coast Road. This follows another fatal incident at a substation earlier in the week. The municipality has urged residents to report suspicious activity near electrical infrastructure.

Mkhwanazi’s allegations and the recent deaths highlight growing concerns over safety and governance in KwaZulu-Natal. Some MPs have warned of public anger if any harm comes to the police commissioner.
