Zuma Claims Shivambu Sought to Launch New Party While Still in MKP

Former President Jacob Zuma, leader of the MK Party (MKP), has accused Floyd Shivambu of secretly exploring the formation of a new political party while still an MKP member. Zuma made the remarks during the MKP’s Annual Youth Golf Development event.

Zuma revealed that the party once held Shivambu in high regard, with the two frequently discussing ways to reduce the number of political parties in South Africa. They believed too many parties made it harder for MKP to secure a majority. However, Zuma expressed shock upon learning that Shivambu had been gauging public support for a new party—even while remaining part of MKP.

Shivambu’s political shift came after his removal as MKP Secretary General. Zuma stated that Shivambu was disciplined for misconduct, emphasizing that no member—no matter how influential—is exempt from party rules.

According to Zuma, some MKP members initially followed Shivambu’s consultations but later returned, confused about the purpose of the proposed party. He also claimed Shivambu had privately told people he would soon lead MKP—a move Zuma dismissed as unrealistic.

The developments highlight internal tensions within MKP, raising questions about Shivambu’s political future and the stability of Zuma’s party. Shivambu has yet to publicly respond to Zuma’s claims.
