Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, a businessman with alleged ties to criminal networks, has resurfaced in new reports connecting him to both South Africa’s current and former police ministers.

According to a News24 investigation, former Police Minister Bheki Cele reportedly stayed in a luxury Pretoria penthouse six months ago – an apartment allegedly rented and paid for by Matlala. This comes after previous reports about Matlala’s connections to current Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, raising serious questions about his influence within law enforcement.

Matlala, whose nickname “Cat” references his elusive nature, has been linked to various criminal activities including illegal mining and drug trafficking, though he has never been formally charged. Investigative journalists have been working to uncover the full extent of his alleged operations.

Neither Mchunu nor Cele have directly addressed these latest claims about their connections to Matlala. However, the reports have intensified scrutiny on potential links between senior police officials and figures from the criminal underworld.

Civil society groups are demanding an independent investigation into what they describe as possible “capture” of police leadership by criminal networks. The allegations paint a concerning picture of blurred boundaries between law enforcement and organized crime.

As these reports emerge, pressure is mounting on government oversight bodies to clarify the nature of these relationships and determine whether any officials improperly benefited from associations with Matlala. The situation has sparked renewed concerns about corruption at the highest levels of South Africa’s criminal justice system.
